This October, the town of Ballinasloe will once again play host to one of Europe’s oldest and most iconic fairs. The 2025 Fair and Festival runs across two weekends, from Sunday 5th & Monday 6th October and again from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th October, bringing together the perfect blend of equestrian tradition, community pride, music, and family fun.

Dating back to the 18th century, the Fair is firmly established as a highlight of the European equestrian calendar. Horses and ponies are bought and sold here in their thousands, with many transported to destinations all across Europe. For breeders, traders, and horse enthusiasts, Ballinasloe remains a hub of activity and prestige.

At the heart of the opening weekend is the world-renowned Horse Fair. On Sunday 5th October, the Credit Union Horse of the Fair and the Jim Derwin Equestrian Pony of the Fair competitions will take place in the Fair Green Sand Arena, showcasing some of the finest young horses and ponies in the country. Previous winners of these competitions have gone on to excel in showjumping and sport horse disciplines at home and abroad, underlining the Fair’s continuing role in Ireland’s equestrian story.

Adding to the excitement, the Festival Soundstage will be set up in the town centre on Sunday 5th October, bringing live music and entertainment right into the heart of Ballinasloe, creating a lively atmosphere for both locals and visitors. The fun doesn’t stop there. The Fox McFadden Fun Fair returns, running from 2nd–12th October, with thrilling rides and amusements that promise fun for all ages throughout both weekends.

The second weekend, the Festival Weekend, begins on Friday 10th October. Families can enjoy early evening entertainment on the Festival Soundstage, followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 8.30pm. Once the skies have lit up, crowds will gather on Main Street for the much-anticipated Street Tug of War, a lively competition that always brings great spirit and good cheer. On Saturday 11th October, tradition and music take centre stage. The Sheep fair highlights Ballinasloe’s deep agricultural roots, while the Mare & Foal Classes at the Sand Arena celebrate the best of local horse breeding. Music lovers are in for a treat, with a standout performance from Irish Country music star Cliona Hagan at 3pm on the Festival Soundstage. Known for her powerhouse voice and lively stage presence, Cliona’s performance is expected to draw a huge crowd and create one of the festival’s most memorable moments.

The festival reaches its grand finale on Sunday 12th October, with a day packed full of variety. Highlights include a thrilling Motorbike Stunt Show, a static Vintage Display of classic cars, tractors and machinery, and the beloved Dog Show. The Food & Craft Market will line Dunlo Street, offering artisan goods and delicious local produce, while the Adult Baking Competition promises to showcase the very best in home baking talent. For younger visitors, the Children’s Art & Craft Competitions will also be a treat.

Over on Society Street, the Festival Marquee will host live music, entertainment, and a delightful Kids’ Magic Show, ensuring plenty of family-friendly fun. Adding to the excitement, the day will feature the ever-popular Kids’ Tug of War and Junior Tractor Derby, perfect events to close the festival on a high.
For those with an interest in heritage, the History & Heritage Evening takes place on Tuesday 7th October at 8pm in Gullane’s Hotel, offering a fascinating look at the Fair’s historical significance and Ballinasloe’s proud legacy as a market town.

Chairman of the Festival Committee, Mal Croffy, expressed his pride in this year’s line-up:
“The Ballinasloe Fair & Festival is a unique event where tradition, community, and fun come together. With two weekends of equestrian excellence, cultural events, and family entertainment, there’s truly something for everyone this year.”

As the clip-clop of hooves returns to the streets and the town fills with music, laughter, and excitement, the Ballinasloe Fair and Festival 2025 promises to be one of the highlights of the year.
